HoneyWired Launches Died of Exposure

You can’t pay your landlord in impressions. A darkly satirical browser game about creative work that pays in exposure instead of money — and what that costs the people taking the gig.

HoneyWired has launched Died of Exposure, a browser game about creative work that pays in visibility instead of money.

Every creative has heard the pitch: “We don’t have a budget right now, but the exposure will be massive.” For decades the industry has normalized trading real labor for hypothetical prestige. The game plays out what comes next — the slow death march of freelance promises, unpaid spec work, and “great portfolio opportunities” — as an unforgiving retro Job Trail simulator where your bank account hits zero long before your follower count ever saves you.
“Exposure isn’t currency — it’s hypothermia.”
Kevin McGlone, Creative Director, HoneyWired
“Working for exposure gets treated like a rite of passage. It isn’t. It’s a way to move the risk onto whoever can least afford it, and we’ve all just gone along with it,” says Creative Director Kevin McGlone. “So we made a game where you can watch it happen. The joke is on the industry that keeps asking, never on the people who have to say yes.”

Players watch their money go down and their Exposure go up. Only one of those is worth anything. Health and sanity drain the whole way, and the hazards are the familiar ones: scope creep, “quick five-minute favors,” the invoice that’s ninety days late, the client who ghosts after one more round of small tweaks, the deck due over a holiday weekend. Every fork in the road is a dilemma anyone freelancing will recognize — take the unpaid spec pitch, or rest and risk missing rent. No matter how much exposure you bank, the ledger never balances. There’s a salaried job waiting at the end of the trail, and almost nobody reaches it.

It’s drawn as pixel art on a green phosphor CRT. The Chicago skyline is built block by block, with one small figure walking it. The 8-bit portrait of the player visibly decays as the run wears on. The whole game is a single file that runs entirely client-side and loads instantly.

Died of Exposure is free to play and requires no account. It carries a word from HoneyWired’s own Mac time tracker, Time Heist, which exists for roughly the same reason.
